Guide To Buying An Engagement Ring

Finding the perfect engagement ring can feel daunting but our ethos here at tomfoolery is relaxed and supportive. We celebrate individuality and offer a personal approach that aims to put you fully at ease throughout the process. We don’t believe in conventional rules when it comes to proposing or choosing the right ring for you and your partner.

Our advice is to think carefully about the kind of style you both like, be that a contemporary twist on the traditional solitaire ring or something a bit different. Take some time to browse our collection online and visit our Muswell Hill gallery with a couple of rings or designers in mind.

It can be helpful to consider words that describe what you’re looking for: for example, delicate, organic, deco, asymmetrical…

Many of our customers choose to visit the gallery as a couple – please feel free to inform us of your budget in advance and we will do our best to discretely guide you to rings within your price range.
If you have a clear vision of the ring you want or simply wish to add that personal touch, we invite you to take advantage of our expert bespoke service by arranging a consultation with our bespoke team.

PLANNING A PROPOSAL

If you’re planning a surprise proposal we would advise you to purchase the ring no more than a few weeks before the date you have in mind. This will give you a window of time in which you can exchange the ring if it’s not quite right.

In most cases, we’re able to extend our exchange policy to 30 days for engagement rings. If you need longer please enquire and we will try to extend further. This means if the ring isn’t ideal style- or size-wise you or your partner can return within this period to find your perfect match. Please note that the ring must be returned to us unworn as any damage affects our ability to exchange the ring.

With regards to sizing, we recommend proposing with the ring of your choice and then returning later on to have the band altered for a more comfortable and secure it. We offer one resize free of charge customers spending over £1000 on a ring.

Alternatively, if the design you have chosen doesn’t suit the resizing process we will advise you to return within our 30-day exchange period to order the same, or a similar, design in a different size. The process of making a new ring takes around 4-6 weeks but do let us know if you have an approaching deadline and we will do our best to meet it.

CHOOSING A STONE

Our selection of engagement rings offers you a wide range of stones in different shapes and cuts, from diamonds and the ‘big three’ precious gemstones (sapphire, ruby and emerald) to a vast array of beautiful alternatives (morganite, garnet, spinel, tourmaline to name but a few).

Consider your priorities – Sparkle? Colour? Shape? Or is there a specific stone that holds sentimental value?

We pride ourselves in stocking unique stones, many of which feature inclusions that make them one of a kind. Our selection of tf Stones includes coloured and salt & pepper diamonds which can be purchase alone or as part of a bespoke commission.

If you’re unsure, we would be more than happy to talk you through the points to consider about each stone.

Perhaps you’ve inherited a pre-worn ring that you’d like to remodel into a new design? If this is the case, our team would be happy to discuss bespoke options using the existing stones.

CHOOSING A METAL

Our designers and in-house bespoke service offer a wide range of metals and gold alloys. These include yellow, white and rose gold in 18ct, 14ct and 9ct, in addition to platinum, titanium and silver.
Each of these variations has potential advantages and disadvantages – if you have any questions please discuss with a member of our team who can advise in terms of look and durability.
